Joseph R. Wiley (1844-1894) was school superintendent for Multnomah County (1868-1870), captain of the Portland police force, captain of the Emmett Guards (a militia), a Portland City Council member, proprietor of the Catholic Sentinel newspaper, and a volunteer fireman. For purposes of this website, though, he is best known for being involved in early Portland baseball. He was part of an 1873 meeting with Portland baseball organizer Joseph Buchtel aimed at taking "some action towards reviving this national athletic game of base ball in Portland," according to a March 27, 1873 Oregonian article. He also appears to have played with the Portland Pioneers and was captain of the volunteer fire department baseball squad.

This tintype originated in an album from Oregon which contained 19th century Oregon CDV's and tintypes. Many of the CDV's had Buchtel photographer backmarks and appear to show two brothers, including in baseball and fire uniforms.

Joseph Buchtel (1830-1916) - an acquaintance of President Lincoln - was one of Portland's earliest photographers, Portland's first fire chief, and helped to begin and organize the first baseball teams in Oregon, including the Portland Pioneer Club in 1866 and the Willamettes of East Portland in 1884 (he was known for being able to throw underhand to second base while facing home plate).

Joseph's younger brother, Samuel Buchtel (d. 1901), followed him into the photography business in Portland beginning in the early 1880's. Samuel helped form the Wide-Awake Baseball Club in 1867 and was its captain.

Joseph had seven children, including sons Albert Z. (1857-1880), Frank S. (1861-1901), Fred G. (1878-1967), and Archie L. (1867-1961). Frank is known to have played for the Portland teams Stars and Willamettes in the 1880s.

Given the album's Oregon images, the baseball and fireman content, the Buchtel backmarks, and the prominence of the Buchtels in Portland's early baseball teams and fire department, it is believed that this tintype originates from the Buchtel family and shows members of an early Oregon baseball team.

Dillworth sponsored an outdoor team, the Dillworth Derbies, in the 1910 Tri-City League, as reported in the Oregonian on April 17, 1910. This photo appears to show them because they are wearing cleats. Dillworth was a clothier at 392 East Morrison St. in Portland.

In addition, Dillworth sponsored an indoor baseball team, also called the Derbies, according to a November 17, 1909 Oregonian article. Other indoor league teams included the Goodyear Gold Seals (presented in this gallery), WP Fuller & Co., Honeyman Hardware Co., Columbia Hardware Co., and the YMCA, as seen in the standings shown in a December 5, 1909 Oregonian article. In 1909, the games were played on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at Ringler's Gymnasium and at the YMCA at 8:30 p.m. Admission was free.

My suspicion that this team wearing "Gold Seal" uniforms and standing before "Gold Seal Rubber Co." signs is a circa 1910 Portland club is supported by the Goodyear Rubber Company having fielded in the 1908-1910 period a Portland "Gold Seal" indoor baseball team. Called the Goodyear Gold Seals, they played in an indoor league that included professional players wintering in Portland who played in the league to stay active until the baseball season opened in the spring, according to a November 1, 1909 Oregonian article. Evidence that this is an indoor team is seen in their shoes; they do not appear to be wearing baseball cleats.

Other indoor league teams included the Dillworth Derbies, WP Fuller & Co., Honeyman Hardware Co., Columbia Hardware Co., and the YMCA, as seen in the standings shown in a December 5, 1909 Oregonian article. ]]>1907 L.S. Frakes Tri-City Baseball League champions; Multnomah County, Oregon. This is a second generation image, probably from the 1940's. Only a few old but non-original images appear on this site. This one is worth including because it offers a few interesting details.

Those pictured are identified on the reverse as follows: Back row (left to right) - Clyde Ruppert (of); Joe Fay (ss), Troy Myers (2b), Nick Whitehead (mgr), Harvey Newell (2b), George "Chick" Newell (c), Dutch Mangold (u); Front row (left to right) - Ash Houston (3b), Alex Oliver (of), George White (c), Arch Parrott (1b), Rich Parrott (p and of), Harry Lytle (mascot).

Arch and Rich Parrott were the brothers of Walter "Jiggs" Parrott, the first native Oregonian to play in the major leagues, and Tom Parrott, the only only other native Oregonian to play in the majors in the 19th century.

Joe Fay played for the Portland Beavers in 1906 and 1907, and was the coach and manager for the Oregon Agricultural College team in 1908. He is pictured elsewhere on this site playing with LaGrande in 1900.

Ash Houston played one game for the Portland Beavers in 1907 (he got a hit), and 25 games for the 1908 Oakland Oaks.

Stamped on the reverse is the 1940's-era return address of L.J. Werschkul & Sons. This is Leslie Werschkul, uncle to Gordon Werschkul aka movie actor Gordon Scott who played Tarzan.

The league opened the 1936 season on Sunday, May 3 and, this being Portland, rain cancelled the Maccabees match that day, according to the May 5, 1936 Oregonian.

Normally player uniforms are just that - uniform. Apparently nobody told these players where on their jerseys to affix the "P" because they're in different spots. They do look ready to play baseball, but the message on the reverse discusses the other male pursuits of hunting and eating: "Dear Ma, I will be out Sun. if it don't rain. I am going to bring the boys that I work with out with me. We are coming out to shoot squirrels and have some fun. Be sure you have something good to eat. Have some chicken and noodle soup. That's my favorite. Willie." (At least he didn't say squirrel and noodle soup.)

He worked for the Beavers for 35 years and was responsible for the popular Rollie Truitt Scrapbooks, record books that he published from 1948-1956. From 1964-1970 Truitt handled the public address announcing at Multnomah Stadium.

I assume the home opener was the Portland Beavers first 1949 game at Vaughn Street stadium on April 12. The Beavers lost 7-5 loss in ten innings on their way to a disappointing 85-102 record.

This ticket was for the opening games of the 1956 semi-pro baseball season at Portland's Sckavone Field. Archer Blower and Pipe defeated the defending champion Longshoremen team 8-0 in the opening contest, and in the closing game Smith-Crosley beat the Portland Colts 5-2, according to the May 14, 1956 Oregonian.

The year 1957 is well past the pre-1920 period this website focuses on, but this photo is worth displaying because it includes future major league star Mickey Lolich as a nearly 17 year old member of the Willamette Heights post 102 baseball team. They played in the American Legion World Series in Billings, Montana that year and lost the title game 10-6 to Cincinnati.

The caption identifies the players as follows, from left to right: Front row - Ken Scales, Vern Brazzle, Lou Wright, John Sturdevant, John Simich, Lauren Underwood, Al Hawthorne. Standing - Wade Williams (assistant coach), Dick Bosch, Karl Haag, Terry Lenchitsky, Mickey Lolich, George Spencer, Pete Verdurmen and Jim Partlow (coach). The team was comprised of Lincoln High School players, according to a September 10, 1957 Oregonian article.
